YWA Literature Camps

For current camp details see home page "Hear Ye Hear Ye."

A novel camp! have you ever wished you could enter the world of your favorite

book to experience the lives of the characters?

Each summer, Louisa Lindsay-Sprouse creates day camps rooted in that idea,

with separate sessions for elementary and middle school students.

With Louisa and her husband, Frank, campers enter a hands on adventure

inspired by well-loved classics, becoming cooks, scientists, artists,

builders, storytellers...

Camps:

What the Cyclops Wished He'd Known! Based on The Iliad & The Odyssey and

Homer's ancient Greece where fact and myth gleam from ancient ruins.

Down the Mississippi: Based on the roaring good stories by Mark Twain and the

wild Mississippi of the 1850's

Sea Dogs and Water Gypsies: Based on rollicking wild tales of gold, lace and

tattooed islanders -- discover what Moby Dick, Treasure Island and a

mysterious lady pirate have in common.

Fools, Fighters and Fine Arts: Why did they throw their plates out the window?

Who was dancing on a cloth of gold? Why did Shakespeare hide spies in the

attic? Explore European Renaissance and go behind the scenes of

Shakespeare's Elizabethan Theatre.

Castles, Cauldrons & King Arthur...knights, dragons, monks and a talking

head...Based on legends from the ancient British Isles and medieval Europe.

Camp times: 9:00 AM- 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday

Mixed Voices

Young Writers Association’s Mixed Voices

Spoken word publishing, Mixed Voices on KLCC

Our lives are charged with story, memory, imagination -- Authors of all ages share their writing on Mixed Voices. Young Writers Association unites with KLCC to air five minutes of short prose and poetry on KLCC’s Northwest Passage, 89.7 FM, the last Monday of each month, 4:00 pm. We are seeking high quality submissions from authors of all ages.

Guidelines for Mixed Voices

Submit short prose or poetry that touches on a monthly topic. The topics are merely writing prompts and do not need to be the main idea in the writing. For example, if the topic is school, maybe the main idea is about an interaction with a teacher, a wild school lunch scene, or a moment when something surprising interrupted a drowsy school drone. It can be funny, serious or magical.

--> The writing should sound satisfying when read aloud and kept short, no longer than 90 seconds.

--> The deadline for each topic is the first of the month, and the date for recording is the second or third Saturday of each month, 10:00 a.m., at KLCC.

--> Be sure to include topic, name, occupation (or school & age), phone number, and address. Keep a copy for yourself; we won’t be able to return your work.

For upcoming themes contact YWA.

YEA! and YES!

A collaboration between Young Writers Association and The Science Factory Children's Museum & Planetarium, YEA! and YES! are literature-based integrated units brought into

the schools by a team of professional artists, or artists and scientist, for

full school days of exploration. A storytelling assembly starts the day and

informs the hands-on workshops that follow. "This innovative arts program

empowers students to experience the artistic connection between themselves,

words and the creative arts." Bob Kominski, author.

YEA! Young Escapades in the Arts is an integrated arts program designed for

students, parents and teachers.

Imagine going to school and getting to spend the whole day creating art!

An escapade starts with a story...the threads of the story inspire a hands on

adventure in the arts. After the storyteller performs, the audience divides

into groups, rotating through workshops in each of four to five disciplines:

in dance/drama, in visual arts, in music, and in creative writing.

For each school, artists collaborate while planning their workshops. YEA!

artists are professionals with years of experience sharing their art with

youth and the community.

Young Escapades in the Arts is available on a one day basis or for an

extended program. An extended program means at least three contact days with

YEA! artists and the option of an evening event at the end of the experience.

YEA! students can expect to advance their arts skills and massage their

imaginations while having a great time! Come explore the arts with us!
