After-School Writing Groups

 2011-2021

Experiment with the art of writing in small groups

  • Three terms in eight-week sessions; the 8th week is the Community Reading and reception for all groups
  • End of term Community Readings are 7:00 pm at Barnes & Noble, 1163 Valley River Center, Eugene, in their music department, on December 7, March 14, and June 6.  High school and middle school students read at 7:00pm and elementary school students read at 7:30pm. Refreshments will be served.
  • Fee-based, 90 minute, limited to 10 participants
  • Snack & writing supplies provided to fortify creativity
  • Students submit work to read on YWA's radio spot Mixed Voices on KLCC and to YWA's creative writing journal, UpStarts

Elementary School Writing Groups

Mess with Words Tuesdays for grades 2-3, YWA hosted by the Reach Center
Tuesdays, 4:00-5:30
Exercise your creativity in action packed word-play. Mess with storytelling, make out-loud poems, cut, and glue and dangle words. Tell, illustrate, act and imagine both solo and in teams. Workshops led by Sallie Vandagrift at the Reach Center, 2520 Harris Street, Eugene.

Exercise Your Wild Imagination Tuesdays for grades 4-5, YWA hosted by Barnes & Noble
Tuesdays, 4:00-5:30
Give your creative brain a workout while discovering writers your own age! Try different writing ideas prompted by favorite books, drama games, art, or by odd and familiar objects. Write and illustrate. Play with language and surprise in your original stories and poems. Workshops led by Louisa Lindsay-Sprouse in Barnes & Noble bookstore children's department, 1163 Valley River Center, Eugene.

Tutoring

Individualized Writing Remedies: Writing Tutor, one-on-one     Ages 10-18
Sharpen your writing abilities. Bring an assignment for an English essay, a Science or History report, or upcoming in-class essays you need help organizing before the date it will be given. Tutor and writer Eliza Rotterman will provide exercises to clarify ideas, organize thoughts, and improve sentence structure and word choice. Be prepared to explore language and have fun! Individual tutoring scheduled through Eliza:
Her fee is $35/hr.


Teen Writing Groups

Mentor with an author while discovering writers your age. Exercise creativity and stretch the imagination! Share bits from favorite books, test different writing tips, prepare for publishing, read on the radio and participate in an evening reading.

Middle School Mondays for grades 6-8, CHANGE IN LOCATION - PLEASE NOTE NEW SITE: YWA hosted by The Village School
Mondays, 4:00-5:30

Science Fiction/Fantasy Mondays for ages 13-18, YWA hosted by Tsunami Books
Mondays, 4:00-5:30

-Workshops led by Dave Raines held at St. Paul Center United Methodist Church, 332 58th Street, Springfield, across the street from Thurston High School.

Tuition details:

SPACE IS LIMITED, SO REGISTER EARLY!
PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED: To avoid paying the late registration rate, please send registration form and tuition one week prior to writing group start date.
TUITION: $85/term until one week prior to term start date, $95 after that.
EARLY BIRD DISCOUNTS: 1.) $75/term if you pay one month in advance of term start date (by 10/1 for Fall, by 12/23 for Winter; and by 3/16 for Spring); 2.) If you pay for all three terms (Fall, Winter, Spring) at once it is $210.
EARLY BIRD DEADLINE FOR WINTER TERM IS PASSED. TUITION IS $85.

1.) Group size is limited to 10 participants, so reserve your space with full or partial tuition
2.) Print out and complete a registration form (link found below)

3.) Pay through PayPal (click on Pay Now button below) or send credit card information or check to YWA; see tuition details above for rates.
4.) If you'd like to order a YWA t-shirt, please include that payment through PayPal or with your registration form.
