Inspirations · Sit in a quiet house or in the woods and write about the sights, sounds, smells, and textures you experience · Think about mysterious disappearances · “What if” (i.e. what if you were trapped somewhere?) · Twists and surprise endings · What happens to your body when you are afraid · Everyday or familiar things that turn scary · Keeping your work fewer than 300 words can be a challenge, but a fun one – look at short stories by other writers, such as Alvin Schwartz, for inspiration
Inspirations in literature (look for these online or at the library!) · Edgar Allen Poe · Washington Irving · Mark Twain · Roald Dahl · Alvin Schwartz · Lemony Snicket · Maurice Sendak · Judy Sierra · Ghostly tales from folklore and spooky campfire stories
