Deadline
Postmark deadline has passed. Winners will be notified by October 9, 2010.

Winners
Those chosen as the top three in each age group will be published online and read by performers at YWA’s SCARE-A-THON on October 23, 2010 at Barnes & Noble in Eugene . Top entries will also be submitted to The Register Guard for possible publication.

Inspirations
·          Sit in a quiet house or in the woods and write about the sights, sounds, smells, and textures you experience
·          Think about mysterious disappearances
·          “What if” (i.e. what if you were trapped somewhere?)
·          Twists and surprise endings
·          What happens to your body when you are afraid
·          Everyday or familiar things that turn scary
·          Keeping your work fewer than 300 words can be a challenge, but a fun one – look at short stories by other writers, such as Alvin Schwartz, for inspiration

Inspirations in literature (look for these online or at the library!)
·          Edgar Allen Poe
·          Washington Irving
·          Mark Twain
·          Roald Dahl
·          Alvin Schwartz
·          Lemony Snicket
·          Maurice Sendak
·          Judy Sierra
·          Ghostly tales from folklore and spooky campfire stories
